Exploring Woodlawn, Bronx: New York's Little Ireland

Looking to soak in authentic Irish culture without hopping on a plane to the Emerald Isle itself? Fortunately, you're in luck. It's time to hit the streets of one neighborhood that's been an Irish enclave since the 1800s.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the rich and festive history of Woodlawn. Dubbed New York City's " Little Ireland," this historic neighborhood is not only steeped in Irish traditions and culture thanks to generations of Irish-Americans and Irish immigrants alike, but is also home to one of the area's largest St. Patrick’s Day parades that attracts more than 30,000 spectators each year.

Led by licensed tour guide, Irish-American, and Bronx native Maggie Browne, this tour will include:

• A discussion of Irish immigration to the area throughout the past two centuries, including the important role of the Woodlawn Cemetery in drawing businesses to this area
• A walk along the Woodlawn's main street including a stretch of McLean Ave, which makes up part of "Emerald Mile" known for its large concentration of all things Irish — from shops and pubs to food and music
• A chance to meet local business owners such as a second generation pub where we'll meet the staff and learn about their family's immigration story from Ireland
• The important contribution of Local 147 Tunnel Workers Sandhogs to New York City's subway system, and why those construction workers were known as 'sandhogs'
• Fun facts surrounding Woodlawn's St. Patrick’s Day parade, such as the exact spot on McLean Ave that will get a fresh coat of green paint

Stick around afterward as we end at the long-standing Rory Dolan’s pub, where food and drinks will be available for purchase!

Transportation

By Subway: Take the 4 Train to the final stop (Woodlawn) and transfer to the BX34 bus towards Woodlawn Katonah Avenue near the station at Bainbridge and Jerome Avenues (here is an exact location of the bus stop and route). Disembark the bus at the Katonah Av/E 234 St stop — Mulligan's Fireside Pub is one block away. OR, take the 2 or 5 Train to 233rd Street and walk west for 15 minutes.

By Train: Take a Metro-North Harlem Line to the Woodlawn stop. Mulligan's Fireside Pub is a 10 minute walk away.

By Car: Parking is available around the neighborhood — allow extra time to find parking.
