The Rockport Public Library will host Pat Harpell for a presentation exploring the Maine Fibershed and soil conservation. A Fibershed is a geographical region where natural fiber is produced, processed, made into textiles, and ultimately composted. Harpell will discuss how the the Maine Fibershed is creating a local “Soil-to-Soil” network that assures income equity throughout the lifecycle of fiber; naturally aids in soil and water conservation; manages carbon sequestration; and ignores fast fashion.
From fiber farmers, mills, and natural dyers, to designers, makers, and composting, Harpell will talk about the power of our fiber choices to rebuild the Maine textile industry. The program will also cover the health benefits of using natural fibers on your skin and in your home.
Pat Harpell ran a technology marketing company for over 25 years. After retiring from the tech world, she operated two Yoga Teacher Training Schools with a dedication to underserved populations and founded the South Carolina Herbal Society. Harpell moved to Maine in 2019 and is currently a faculty teacher at the Earthwalk School of Traditional Medicine in Rockport, Maine, and a devotee of environmental stewardship.
