Explore the Liberty Tunnels
About this Event
The Liberty Tunnels opened a century ago, ushering in a period of explosive growth in the South Hills, including a 500 percent increase in the population of Mt. Lebanon. Automobile ownership was expanding, and demand for suburban homes was so strong that there were periodic shortages of moving vans.
When they first opened, the Liberty Tunnels were the longest automobile tunnels in the world. They were originally built with a pedestrian walkway and even equipped with a J*il cell. Join historian Geoff Hurd to learn how the location was selected, how the tunnels were built, and why they changed southern Allegheny County forever.
