About this Event
Mental health is a cornerstone of our overall well-being, yet many of us give it less attention than our physical health. While we might be proactive about diet and exercise, it’s easy to slip into becoming “emotional couch potatoes” — neglecting how we feel, think, act, and interact with the world around us.
Good mental health is not simply the absence of mental illness. It’s about realising our potential, coping with the normal stresses of life, building connections, and contributing to our community. It isn’t about avoiding problems or chasing a “perfect” life, but about living well, feeling capable despite challenges, and even experiencing joy. As Haruki Murakami writes, “Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.”
Every person’s path to mental well-being is unique. We each have our own goals, challenges, talents, and sometimes hidden gifts — as well as our own supports. The good news is that mental health is within everyone’s reach. Winter can be a season that tests our resilience, making it the perfect time to strengthen our mental wellness toolkit.
Join us for an engaging discussion led by Tim Wall, a mental health professional with 35 years of experience in post-traumatic stress work, education, and resource development. Tim is the founder of Canada’s first Trauma-Informed Resource Centre, former Director of Counselling Services at Klinic Community Health Centre in Winnipeg, and past Executive Director of the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention.
In this session, you’ll explore what mental health truly is, how to recognise it in ourselves and others, what contributes to good mental health, and how to prevent unnecessary suffering — so we can all learn to thrive.
