Alternative to What? Experimental Strategies between the Wars from the Solander Collection
Thursday, February 27, 2025
6-7:30pm
Join us for a lecture with scholar and educator, Elizabeth A. Brown as she dives into the Solander Collection and works in the current PCNW exhibition, A New Look at Photo History: Treasurers from the Solander Collection. In the Solander Collection viewers encounter unfamiliar works by known photographers juxtaposed to new discoveries. The show is particularly rich in examples of experimental work made between the end of World War I and the onset of World War II. This lecture explores the wide experimentation and optimism—however wry and sardonic—in interwar period photography. Extraordinary pictures in the exhibition include works by Germaine Krull, Florence Henri, Hans Bellmer, Aleksander Rodchenko, Osamu Shiihara, and Man Ray. In close readings of these and other individual works Brown will analyze the variety of aesthetic goals and shifting contexts in art communities across Europe and elsewhere.
