ExperienceTO: Toronto Metropolitan University History Tour
About this Event
Welcome to the Toronto Metropolitan University History Tour! Today, we are going to journey through over 75 years of remarkable transformation, tracing TMU's evolution from its humble beginnings in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology (founded with just 225 students on the historic site of Ontario’s first teacher training college) into the vibrant, urban powerhouse it is today. As we explore the campus, you will see how this institution continually redefined itself: gaining official university status in 1993, pioneering hands-on 'Zone Learning,' and actively reshaping the downtown Toronto landscape with landmark facilities like the Student Learning Centre on Yonge Street and the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the historic Maple Leaf Gardens. Finally, we will look at the university's newest chapter, including its landmark 2022 renaming to Toronto Metropolitan University. Whether you are an alumnus, a student, or a curious visitor, get ready to discover how a post-war trade school grew to educate over 48,000 students and became an inseparable part of Toronto's cultural and architectural fabric.
Join us for a FREE, public tour that will be a good experience for anyone: whether you’re 8 or 80 years old, and whether you’re a curious local, solo traveler, backpacker, newcomer, or part of a group of friends.
