About this Event

Mary Wokomah (Sunkissed) is a Nigerian contemporary artist based in Thunder Bay. While Sunkissed is the name, versatility is the game. The artist uses a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that continue the challenging of boundaries. Using mixed materials such as acrylic on canvas, hot glue, spray paint, and digital media, Mary portrays a range of topics including; self-empowerment, black empowerment, spiritual growth, community & friendship. The universe of Sunkissed is female, taking on the perspective of an immigrant black woman maneuvering her way in today’s western society. Her exhibition examines the enigmatic ADHD mind of the artist as she uses art to better understand her experiences in an effort to organise & process them. The charismatic contemporary painter directs and depicts surreal compositions inspired by the cinema in their subconscious. The aesthetics of Mary’s works orbit around the fluidity of colour, conveyed through her acrylic pours, as well as SPACE by painting abstract nebulae which allows her the chance to create undiscovered cosmos (Endless possibilities).

In most of her work, Mary brings her paintings to life through the use of hot glue, giving the painting a 3D look and feel. Her works are filled with colour, contrast, metaphors, foreshadowing, and enigma. Portraying the dualities and polarities of life, with a focus on an intentional and sunny disposition. As a result, “Experiences” captures fragments of the artist. Hence her moniker “Sunkissed” which means

1 : having plenty of bright sunlight

2 : having skin kissed naturally by the sun. A sun-kissed glow.

Mary has established an online platform as Sunkissed Universe and has sold her work across the globe, including North America, Europe, and Africa. In 2021, the artist was most notably recognized in The Walleye Arts & Culture Magazine for her involvement with Lakehead’s Ingenuity Program, due to her unique business which fuses art and fashion to make wearable art.

The artist encourages authenticity through self-expression. Her message to everyone is that, the possibilities of what you can achieve are truly endless once you show up fully as yourself, accepting all aspects of your being.
