The Experience Sankofa Project Living Museum is Live from Black August to Black History Month on 2nd Sundays
About this Event

"Everyone needs to experience this! This is one of Oakland's finest celebrations of Black culture! Just amazing!" -Carolyn Johnson, Black Cultural Zone

Come check the nwest offering of the Experience Sankofa Project (ESP) Living Museum. Now live every Second Sunday between Black August to Black History Month.

Experience Sankofa Project is an innovative art exhibit that combines history, live performance art, and sacred altars into an interactive timeline of African and American history. It is a physical and sensory journey from our African greatness to Present-day Oakland and brings history to life.

"This blew my mind! I am amazed at how they pulled all these amazing elements together in such an intimate way. It inspired me to connect with my past and discover new things about myself" -Imani of the Pharcyde)

WHAT'S NEW

Each Second Sunday is a new theme, with additions to the museum that make it grow and expand each time. It's always something new to see. Our themes for the 2022-2023 season are:

AUGUST 14, 2022: Honoring Black August

SEPTEMBER 11, 2022: Plant Power to the People

OCTOBER 9, 2022: Ancestors Walk with Me

NOVEMBER 13, 2022: Honoring Black Brown Unity

DECEMBER 1, 2022: Embodying the Principles of Kwanzaa

JANUARY 8,2023 Manifesting Magic in the New Year

FEBRUARY 12, 2023: Black History Black Future Black Now

Each offering has more opportunities to truly experience history: Walk through the sands of the Sahara. Sit on the throne of African Royalty. Read the news that Slavery was abolished. Experience the lunch counter Sit-ins, Bay Area Hip hop roots and so much more! You will just have to experience it!

It is our goal that all folks understand African/Black peoples’ contributions to human civilization to ignite our collective capacity for more empathy and solidarity, transform our social realities, and create a more positive and sustainable future. I am Because We are! Experience Transformation! We "look back to move forward" - Sankofa!

PLEASE BE ADVISED...

  • SENSORY IMPACT: Participants will walk through various historical scenes that use lights, sounds, smells, and theatrical smoke machines. This Experience may trigger people with epilepsy, photo and chemical sensitivities, and/or other sensory processing issues.
  • ACCESS NEEDS: Participants will be required to physically walk through the museum and through some narrow corridors with minimal lighting. We can provide limited additional support for those with mobility challenges if needed. Please let us know ahead of time so we can be sure to support your experience. It is not recommended for those who require a wheelchair as the floors are variable.
  • PARENTAL ADVISORY: Participants will walk through various historical scenes that may show some depictions of racial violence and documented trauma. We believe these exhibits are essential in evoking empathy for the African Diasporic Experience. Parental Guidance is strongly advised.
