About this Event

The Deering Estate, Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at Miami Dade College, and the Moving Image Alliance, present EXPANDED ARCHIVE Home Movie Day Miami 2026, Miami’s 2026 edition of the international Home Movie Day celebration.

Presented as part of Home Movie Day, the annual international celebration coordinated by the Center for Home Movies, the event joins programs around the world that encourage communities to rediscover, share, preserve, and reconsider the value of amateur films and personal moving images. In Miami, the day brings together home-movie preservation, local history, archival moving images, experimental music, and contemporary audiovisual performance at the Deering Estate.

This event will take place in three parts on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theater, with activities scheduled between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Check‑in will begin 15 minutes before each activity. Tickets are free with RSVP through Eventbrite.

Program Schedule:

2:00 PM – 4:30 PM — HOME MOVIE DAY OPEN HOUSE

Continuous projections of recent home movie acquisitions from the Wolfson Archives. Visitors may bring 8mm, Super 8, 16mm, VHS, Hi8, and MiniDV home movies for quick inspection and discussion with Barron Sherer and Wolfson Archives staff. Materials may be considered for donation. No digitization will take place on site; Archives staff and Sherer accept donations and follow up with donors after the event.

4:30 PM – 5:30 PM — DONATING HOME MOVIES TO THE WOLFSON ARCHIVES

An illustrated presentation with archival clips led by Artist Barron Sherer exploring how the Wolfson Archives handles home-movie donations, what happens after material is received, preservation and processing procedures, and the general timeline involved. Public Q&A follows.

7:30 PM – 9:00 PM — LIVE AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCE — FEATURED PROGRAM

Performances: Archival Feedback; ‘needle’; Dania Sixto + Freddy Jouwayed. Live experimental sound and music engage multiscreen compilations created from previously donated home movies to Wolfson Archives. Jouwayed provides live visuals in collaboration with Sixto and serves as technical director for the evening.

About the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives:

The Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at Miami Dade College collects, preserves, catalogs, and makes accessible film and video materials documenting Florida history and culture. The Archives accepts donations of film and video relating to Florida and the region, preserving these materials as part of Florida’s moving-image history.

About Moving Image Alliance:

Moving Image Alliance is a Knight Foundation-supported studio project founded by artist Barron Sherer that supports contemporary moving-image work through legacy cinema practices and technologies, instruction, advocacy, and public performance.

About the Artist-in-Residence:

Barron Sherer is a time-based media artist with a background in moving image archival practices focusing on altering and repurposing archived films and videos in cinematic, para-cinematic, and gallery installation contexts. Artistic processes in social media and digital platforms help Barron create source material and documentation for temporary and experiential installations. His films and videos have been screened locally, nationally, and internationally. His practice has led to awards, commissions, fellowships, and residencies including a 2020 Oolite Arts Ellies Creators Award, and in 2017, a South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship.

About the Deering Estate:

Deering Estate, located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Miami, is a 21st Century house museum, cultural and ecological field station, and a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, owned by the State of Florida and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. Deering Estate is designated as one of seven Miami Dade County “Heritage Parks” which have a vital role in our community’s history, environment and in providing recreational and cultural experiences.

Cultural Arts Programming at the Deering Estate is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, and The Deering Estate Foundation, Inc.
