Join us at the Alliance Française for the opening of Eddie Sulca's The Art of Tridimensional Tapestry exhibition!
Travel with us to Perú, where the master weaver Eddie Sulca - one of the best exponents of the Peruvian contemporary weavings - comes from. Let yourself be amazed by his stunning three dimensional tapestries that seem to stand away from the wall.
If he learned techniques from his grandfather, Eddie Sulca is the originator of unusual effects with unique colors and while many try to duplicate his work, none succeed. He employs motifs and patterns drawn from the ancient cultures like the Inca and the Wari and combines their essence with other designs that comes directly from his dreams.
Natural ingredients are used to create secret formulas that produce the beautiful natural colors used in Eddie’s tapestries. Every year during the rainy season, Eddie and his wife walk for miles in the rugged Andean Mountains surrounding Ayacucho to gather leaves, berries, branches, roots and insects. These ingredients combined with a secret formula that are known only to Eddie and his wife produce natural dyes with subtle color effects that are unobtainable with synthetic chemical dyes.
Native from Ayacucho, Peru, Eddie is a 3rd. Generation Award Winner tapestry weaver. His grandfather rediscovered a technique – Arwi – that took the Peruvian tapestry to the next level 100 years ago.
Eddie has continued with the family tradition and now he is celebrating his 50th Anniversary as a weaver. Eddie started weaving with his grandfather when he was 10 years old. At 15 he won a prestigious award in Ayacucho and started his own atelier with a helper.
His wife Gladys has supported him with the dying of the wool creating very special and unique colors that allow to create magnificent pieces.
After the opening night on Thursday, July 25 at 6 pm, the exhibition will be open to visitors Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 4 pm. The exhibition will be on display until August 24, 2024.
