This workshop will take place in person at ISAW.Registration is required.
Please join illustrator and teaching artist Joan Chiverton for an afternoon of sketching in the galleries in conjunction with the exhibition Madinat al-Zahra: The Radiant Capital of Islamic Spain. Develop your drawing skills and discover a new way of seeing the exhibit, as you sketch masterpieces and other objects. Following a brief introduction and tutorial, Ms. Chiverton will circulate the galleries and provide individual coaching, if desired. All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. Participants should bring their own drawing pad or paper with a board, but we will have paper on hand if necessary. Gallery specific pencils will be provided by ISAW. For conservation reasons pens, pastels, charcoal and paints need to be kept at home.
Joan Chiverton is a New York based illustrator, painter, educator whose work has been widely exhibited and appeared in the NY Times, Wall Street Journal and more. She is represented by the gallery, The Old Print Shop, and has been in numerous group and one-person shows, most recently at the Public Theater from May to August 2024. She is known for her sketches of performing artists on stage, working with City Winery, Joe's Pub, Bryant Park, Lincoln Center, Greenwich House and more. Previous to her illustration career she was an award-winning Art Director/Creative Director with ad agencies in NYC and upstate NY. She teaches at Fashion Institute of Technology.
Unless otherwise indicated, public events sponsored by ISAW take place on the first or second floor of our building. Both floors are accessible by elevator from our entry lobby, and an ADA-compliant bathroom is available in the basement level, which is also accessible by elevator.
