About this Event
The Hunterdon County Historical Society will open its Deats/Thatcher Archaeological Collection of Native American Artifacts exhibition on Saturday, October 22, from 10 am to 2 pm.
The exhibition will be held at the Flemington Public Library located at 118 Main St., Flemington, NJ.
Everyone is welcome to visit the top floor of the Flemington Public Library to explore this important and fascinating exhibition, which comprises a rich and varied collection of Native American artifacts and ethnographic pieces reflecting the interests of its collectors: Hiram E. Deats and John C. Thatcher.
Most of the items in the collection were found in Hunterdon County and date back as far as 12,000 years. The stone and pottery artifacts were collected by Hiram E. Deats (1870-1963) and John C. Thatcher (1874-1957) during the late 19th and early 20 centuries.
Both men owned farms in Hunterdon County and found many arrowheads and other stone artifacts in their fields. Deats’ farm was located at Flemington Junction and Thatcher’s was west of Flemington on Thatcher’s Hill.
In addition to the artifacts, the collection offers a fascinating history of the Lenape people in Hunterdon County from early times through their first contact with Europeans 500 years ago.
