About this Event

Being a non-profit leader is never easy and the pandemic has added new and interesting challenges! It has also given rise to innovation and leadership that is inspiring to anyone in the know.

This Virtual event is designed to bring Executive Directors (see definition below) getting together and exploring leadership concepts that are not part of corporate culture but about caring culture, community and inclusion. We will share stories of success and resilience. And we rely on each other to explore answers to our most difficult questions.

After each morning speaker, we will have facilitated break out groups to discuss the presenter's information and explore ways we have and might apply the learning.

The day will open with Karlyn Percil talking about how to cultivate psychologically safe and culturally competent workplaces using her LEAP to Equity framework. We will examine what allyship is and isn’t, what constitutes bystander action and how to switch to Upstander action, plus how to turn allyship competencies into daily anti-racist action.

Then. Alison Brewin will share her learning on an approach to leadership that builds agency and engagement rather than than fear and isolation through the application of Marshall Ganz's Empathetic Bridge.

And the third presenter will be Karen Joseph, CEO of Truth and Reconciliation Canada, who will share common principles of leadership in Indigenous communities in Canada.

At Lunch, others will join us to engage with Amelia Nagoski to talk about the work embodies in the book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle. (your ticket for the whole day includes this lunch)

In the afternoon we will dig into some common challenges and build purpose-driven solutions that are non-profit sector focused.

This session is for people currently in a paid position as an Executive Director of a non-profit (mostly in BC but the content is open). By Executive Director we mean an individual responsible for overall leadership of a non-profit who reports directly to a Board of Directors. Co-EDs, CEOs and Operations/General Managers, Artistic Directors, Directors are some of the titles people in this role may have. It is not for Board members or those aspiring to be Executive Directors (sorry! See the Nonprofit Management program at SFU, or my Purpose-Driven Governance Workshop if you are that person.)
