A journaling club and speaking circle for those looking to reflect and connect
About this Event

As the daylight fades and the evenings lengthen, many of us begin to feel more contemplative. Historically, this was a time to gather indoors and share stories -- not to dwell in our thoughts alone, but to reflect in and with community. Exe-pression offers an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with this tradition. It blends two practices: a journaling club, where you will be provided with prompts to support individual written reflection; and a speaking circle, where you will be invited to share thoughts on a given theme.

You will be provided with all materials and instructions needed to engage with both parts of the event. There are no expectations about whether and how you will participate -- for example, you can doodle instead of writing in your journal, listen but not speak in the circle, or speak multiple times! All that is required is for you to arrive with a sense of curiosity and a commitment to being empathetic (towards yourself and others) while you are in the space.

  • Where and when the event will take place: The event will run on 1st November from 7-9pm at The Hall Exeter (Stepcote Hill, EX1 1BD)
  • What will be provided: Light refreshments, a blank journal and pen, reflective prompts, handouts with further information and suggestions for next steps (you are welcome to bring your own journaling supplies if you prefer)
  • Who the event is for: Participation is open to anyone who is 16+ years old; if you have accessibility or other support needs, there will be an opportunity to indicate this when booking so we can discuss arrangements

Exe-pression will be run by Dr Caitlin Kight, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education. Dr Kight studies reflective practice and the use of creative activities to support wellbeing. She runs a monthly journaling club through the university's Wellbeing Network, and uses speaking circles in her teaching. Please feel free to contact Caitlin with any questions/comments at [email protected].
