About the hostHamish O'Brien - Permaculture Teacher
Hamish has extensive experience in the farming, landscaping and permaculture industries, a total of 13 years.
3 years of farm work on fruit, vegetable and animal farms.
Growing up in the Devonshire countryside it's all too easy to get roped into the farming experience. At a young age Hamish volunteered at farms and horse stables his mum worked at and later would be working on farms, picking and growing fruits and vegetables and tending to many types of animals; cows, calves, sheep, chickens, goats, pigs, ducks, geese and horses.
10 years of permaculture, traditional gardening and general building.
In his earlier years it was about traditional gardening and general building which lasted for 7 years. Completing all types of hard and soft landscaping tasks like decking, fencing, patios, retaining walls, raised beds and much more… He also renovated houses (Plastering, wall re-building, block laying, wood work etc…). Receiving the drastic calls for climate change and having first hand experience of the damaging actions humans are making to our-ecosystems, he made a conscious decision to change...
Thats when he created Earth Circle Designs and PIG.
Earth Circle Designs is a permaculture design, consulting, implementation and maintenance business. Completing permaculture projects like market gardens, 10 acre regenerative farms and self-sufficient home-steads. Intertwining his hard landscaping and construction skills where necessary. Please see reviews and photos of previous work on facebook.

PIG (Permaculture Inspiration Gathering) is Hamish's permaculture teaching and events business, where he hosts regular permaculture courses and gatherings. The courses are in person and online, teaching people how to create their own abundant permaculture paradise. Alongside this he runs constant gatherings in Bristol and Glastonbury, although they have been put on hold recently due to a restructuring of the business. These gatherings are 3 hour events where he teaches permaculture, inspires regenerative action and connects the community.

"Thank you for an inspiring informative weekend - and for everyone being so welcoming and warm... ??? " - Jane H
" I recently went on the 2 day permaculture course, it was brilliant! Hamish had so much knowledge to share with us all. His passion for permaculture shone through and made him a great teacher, his lessons were easy to follow even for a complete novice like me. I can't wait to use what I've learnt on my allotment and in life in general.
It was also great to meet a group of like minded people. I went by myself but left with lots of new friends!
I highly recommend this course! Even if you don't want to learn about permaculture, I would go just for Laura's amazing cooking ? 6 delicious meals included is an absolute bargain! "- Sophie
"The weekend at Avalon Priory inspired me way beyond my expectations. Hamish’s passionate commitment to making a difference in this topsy-turvy world truly restored my hope for the future of this beautiful planet. So young and yet so wise, Hamish shared his extensive knowledge with such humility and generosity in the loving and supportive space that he held so beautifully for us all.
I first encountered the term “permaculture” a decade or so ago but never realised how neatly it fitted with my holistic “tread lightly” approach to living and growing. So many dots got joined up for me. I don’t see myself doing a PDC but will continue to explore the profound connections that the weekend opened up for me, both socially and in my heart.
Deepest gratitude to you Hamish (and to Laura for the superb vegan meals!)" - Annette
