INSTRUCTOR: Molly Gardner
We are surrounded by conflicting claims about every topic. If you consider what you don’t know for certain, what you have doubts about - you’ll surprise yourself. We take uncertainty for granted. What difference does it make? How do we discern the truth? How do we live without it? What is essential to know? In this 6-week course, we explore humanity’s ever-changing relationship to knowledge. Each week, we review background and relevant information, develop questions, engage in small group discussions, and finally debrief as a whole class.
Topics will include:
Epistemological underpinnings of T/truth
The accumulation of scientific knowledge through time
Truth versus faith, belief, opinion, biases
Misinformation technology
What we deeply wish we knew
Molly Gardner has a History and Education degree from the University of Colorado. Her early interest in the concept of truth led to her studies in philosophy. She was a Social Studies teacher in the Boulder Valley School System. This offered a front-row seat to assess and disseminate knowledge, and how biased and questionable it can be. Her extensive experience as a life-long learning facilitator includes diverse topics such as natural history and Harari’s Homo Deus.
