Excavation of Gips collection

‘Hoe geven verhalen vorm aan de wereld waarin we vandaag de dag leven?’ Met deze vraag werkte curator Co Knol samen met Britse kunstenaar Robin Phoenix Whitehouse. Ze onderzochten de rol van kunstenaars bij het vormen en reflecteren op bestaande verhalen. Robins werk nodigt ons uit om de verschillende lagen van de geschiedenis te verkennen. In Atrium City Hall is een voorproefje van Robins inspirerende proces te zien in de tentoonstelling ‘Buried beneath the ground and scattered across the soil’. Robins projecten hebben een langdurig karakter. Ze zijn geworteld in thema’s als de openbare ruimte, menselijke relaties, kunstgeschiedenis en archeologie. 

De kunstenaar zal vertellen over zijn lopende project ‘Excavation of Gips Collection’, waarin hij de opkomst en ondergang van de gipsafgietselcollectie van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag onderzoekt. Deze collectie werd in de jaren zestig vernietigd en in 2023 door de kunstenaar opgegraven.

'How do stories shape the world we live in today?' This question formed the starting point for a collaboration between curator Co Knol and British artist Robin Phoenix Whitehouse. Together, they explored the role of artists in shaping and reflecting on existing narratives. Robin’s work invites us to delve into the many layers of histories. At Atrium City Hall, visitors can discover a glimpse of Robin’s inspiring project in the exhibition 'Buried beneath the ground and scattered across the soil'. Robin’s projects are long-term in nature and are rooted in conctexts such as public space, human relationships, art history, and archielogical discourse.

The artist will discuss his project, 'Excavation of Gips Collection', in which he investigates the rise and fall of the plaster cast collection of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. This collection was destroyed in the 1960s and excavated by the artist in 2023.

Het Open Paviljoen is een plek voor ontmoeting, uitwisseling en verbeelding. Van 13 juni tot en met 19 juli 2026 bieden we ruimte aan een cultureel programma met workshops, gesprekken, performances en lezingen. Lokale initiatieven, nationale stemmen en internationale denkers ontmoeten elkaar in een open setting waarin kunst niet alleen wordt getoond, maar actief onze samenleving vormt.
