Horror, perhaps more than any other genre, rewards adaptability. Swedish writer/director Anders Jacobsson set out to make a relatively expensive shocker/social-commentary called The Censor. But with the minimal budget he could secure, he instead spent five years making a cheap, bloody satire called Evil Ed about a film editor driven to madness and murder by the cheap, bloody splatter movies he’s forced to cut together. Write what you know, they say. Evil Ed may not have had a bunch of money behind it, but it’s got sharp humor, creative effects, and the DIY, rooting-for-the-underdog aura of a ‘90s VHS gorefest classic.
