About this event

Join us for an afternoon of kōreo, film and kai focused on the topic of everyday solidarities between tauiwi of colour and Tangata Whenua. All welcome.

We hear the word solidarity all the time but what does it actually mean? What might we need to understand to be in solidarity? What does it look like in action? What gets in the way of solidarity? What enables solidarity?

As Ethnic communities and tauiwi of colour we have a unique opportunity to be in relationship with Tangata Whenua that is alternate to the Pākeha relationship. Our kōrero is a call to action to first reflect on how we might be in relationship with Tangata W`henua beyond the learning of Te Reo and/or attending a Te Tiriti workshop, to what some concrete actions could look like in our everyday lives.

We will be supported in our thinking with conversation from our panelists

Hon Marama Davidson (Mana Wāhine, Co-Leader Green Party)

Naima Ali (Human rights advocate)

Mervin Singham (Chief Executive, Ministry of Ethnic Communities)

Pax Assadi (Comedian, Cultural Producer)

Suveen Sanis Walgampola (Co-founder, Duality, Community development)

This will be followed by the screening of the film WHINA, based on the life of Māna Wāhine, Dame Whina Cooper, followed by food and music.

This is an important and ongoing conversation on how we can take better care of each other. This event is brought to you by Manawaka Ao. Our kaupapa recognises our responsibilities as tauiwi of colour, and our commitment to collective wellbeing, care and healing.

Street parking available.

Disability access: entrance to the left hand side of the cinema and outdoor area where the food and DJ will be located.
