Join us for a unique celebration of Arbor Day and Earth Day at the Bethany Beach Nature Center, featuring Dr. Brenda Neece, founder and curator of The Cello Museum. Dr. Neece, a cellist and researcher specializing in the history of the cello, brings her expertise and passion for music to this special event. With a diverse background in cello performance and organology (the history of musical instruments), Dr. Neece will entertain attendees, young, old, and in between, with the reading of The Voice of the Wood about a very special tree and a selection of music that connects us more deeply to nature and our environment.
Performance Highlights:
• Take part in a sing-along of the traditional English folk song, "There was a Tree," modified to celebrate trees in Bethany.
• To go along with the book, which is set in Italy, listen to an early Italian piece: Domenico Gabrielli's Ricercar No. 3.
• If time allows, hear a performance of the ever-popular Bach Suite No.1 in G Major
Dr. Neece's musical story time is a must-see for music lovers and environmental enthusiasts alike, promising an afternoon of beautiful music and communal learning in the heart of nature.
"The Voice of the Wood"
Take an armchair (or nature center bench) journey to Italy and the world of cellos and trees as Dr. Neece reads The Voice of the Wood, a children's book written by Claude Clement and illustrated with paintings by Frederic Clement, at the Bethany Beach Nature Center's Arbor Day and Earth Day celebration. This beautifully illustrated book explores the magical relationship between music and the natural world - and between a very special tree and an enchanted cello.
Perfect for children and adults alike, this reading will remind us of the enduring connection between the earth and its many voices. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with the music, stories, and songs that connect us to the earth and each other.
There will also be a reading of The Secret Garden. In this picture book adaptation of the classic novel, young readers will follow Mary Lennox as she moves into a confusing new home and only finds comfort from exploring the grounds and gardens surrounding the imposing manor house. Through unexpected friendships, good fresh air, connecting to nature, and a mystery surrounding a secret garden, Mary is transformed.
