Monday, 17th June: Evening Lectures: The Scottish War Memorial in Jerusalem: Simply Unique with speaker Very Rev Andrew McLellan, CBEAbout the Event
St Andrews Church in Jerusalem was built as a memorial to those Scottish soldiers who died in the Palestine Campaign of World War I. The foundation stone Memorial at St Andrews was laid by Field Marshal Lord Allenby in 1927 and the Church was opened on St Andrew’s Day 1930.
The background of the Scottish War Memorial in Jerusalem was part of the Palestinian Campaign or World War One: why were Scottish soldiers there and at that time?
The planning of the memorial took ten years and the story of these times is one worth telling – a story of determination and patience.
Today the church, with its minsters and congregation, shares in the colourful ecumenical life of Jerusalem, and works for peace and justice in partnership with local organisations even in these most challenging times.
