About this Event

Ticket includes 2 classes in December:

Monday Evenings, 6:30 until 8:30 pm:
7th December
14th December

This is a short, two-week course where students will be introduced to some classic and aesthetically-significant films. Selected scenes will be shown on a projector, and students will make a set of drawings in response, capturing the magic of cinema.

Film Noir was influenced by the paintings of Caravaggio, while artists such as Picasso and Hopper took inspiration from the look of early motion pictures. Akira Kurosawa and David Lynch, like many other film-makers studied fine art before going into the film industry. We will continue this artistic exchange, sketching along with both the moving image and from cinematic stills.

For each class, two films will be introduced, with a brief overview of the story, its context in the history of cinema, and the features of the film which make it great. We will think about picture making, about tonal contrast, dynamism, composition and narrative, as well as the psychological effect of the bodies and faces of actors. We will be working in a range of mediums, like graphite, marker pen, ink, colouring pencils and oil pastels. This is a perfect class for those hoping to fill sketchbooks with loose sketches and dramatic thumbnail compositions. It will be enjoyable for anyone who loves film.

All artist-quality materials are included in the price of the classes.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided.
Location: 37 Queen Street, Colchester, CO1 2PQ
