ABOUT THE PRODUCTION: This show will be performed at the Actor’s Hub studio theatre in East Perth from the 11th to the 26th of July, with 10 performances in total. Rehearsals will be held twice a week with days dependent on cast availability.ABOUT THE PLAY: Orpheus and Eurydice are young, beautiful and earth-shatteringly in love. On their wedding day Eurydice is stolen away to the Underworld. And here the tale traditionally turns to follow Orpheus’ adventure as he finds his way through to the depths of death to conquer and rescue his beloved. But what about Eurydice? In this beautiful retelling of the Greek myth by Sarah Ruhl, we explore the waiting, the longing, the strength of the ‘princess in the tower’ as we experience the Underworld through Eurydice’s eyes.
ABOUT AUDITIONS: Auditions will be booked in 1 hour workshop blocks for groups of 4 – 8 people and consist of a performance of a short monologue by each auditionee, a section of movement and a section of scene reading.
For the monologue, please prepare a 1 – 2 minute monologue from a piece of your choosing to be performed in front of your audition group and the panel. We would recommend a piece from an Ancient Greek text, Shakespeare or a contemporary piece that uses lyrical/poetic language. For the movement section – please don’t be intimidated by the idea of dancing! We are looking for actors of all abilities to show us how you work with choreographed movement. For the scene reading, a copy of the scenes will be available on the day and will be a cold reading.
ABOUT THE ROLES: Casting is open to actors of any age*/gender/ethnicity, those that are used in the following descriptions are guides – if you think you would fit the character we are absolutely open to any casting (including gender swapping).
*All actors must be 18 or older by the time of auditions.
ORPHEUS and EURYDICE have a small amount of sung dialouge (you don’t have to be a good singer, just confident enough to carry a cute tune), and are required to be physically intimate (hugging, kissing) with one another in some scenes.
EURYDICE, female, young adult. Eurydice is lost in the world, for a moment she thinks she has it all but the next she is certain she knows nothing, she is conscious of her own naivety.
ORPHEUS, male, young adult. Orpheus’ whole world is Eurydice. He would pull the moon from the sky for her, and believes in himself so much that he just might.
FATHER, male, adult. Eurydice’s father who has been in the Underworld, dead, for some time. He is one of the few who have not forgotten the world above.
HADES, male, adult. His age fluctuates with his mood, he appears as a mysterious and leering man to tempt Eurydice to the Underworld and as a petulant child as he keeps her captive, then later as a man again suave and deceptive as he knots the final threads of her fate.
THE STONES. Both demonic and cherub-like these are the Chorus of the Underworld, those who seem to have only ever known the world below and its rules. Three speaking roles are specified in the script, the BIG STONE, LITTLE STONE and LOUD STONE but we will be casting additional Stones in featured non-speaking roles.
