About this Event
In celebration of World Philosophy Day, join Philosophy lecturers from Kingston, Cork, UWE, and the University of Bristol in discussion to explore the relationship between the history of European philosophy and the far reaching global philosophical traditions that it has both excluded, and been influenced by, and with which it shares deep positive connections still to explore.
A Panel Discussion with Guest Speakers will be followed by an Audience Q & A Session
The history of European philosophy in relation to wider world philosophical traditions has been plagued by its association with a history of colonialism and exclusion which others and often ignores the breadth of global philosophical perspectives. Yet this obscures how the history of philosophy has involved many moments of productive influence and creative dialogue as well affinities still to be fully explored. This panel will focus on how the continental tradition has sought to critically self-examine its problematic colonial history but also how continental philosophy’s creative methodologies have been open to influences beyond Europe – at times having been embraced in non-Western traditions – as well as acknowledging the difficulties involved in comparative work.
We are delighted to have join us:
Stella Sandford, Professor of Modern European Philosophy, Kingston University London, whose many areas of expertise include critical philosophies of race in relation to Kant.
Adam Loughnane, Lecturer in Philosophy at University College Cork. His research and teaching centre on the phenomenological and aesthetic traditions of Europe (Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty) and Japan (Nishida and the Kyoto School).
Francesco Tava, Associate Professor at UWE, who as a specialist in the history of European philosophy also considers the very idea of Europe and engages in the problem of decolonisation.
Tzuchien Tho, Senior Lecturer at Bristol University, has done research on Spinoza, Leibniz, Deleuze, and Badiou. At Bristol, he teaches classes ranging from the history and philosophy of cosmology to classical Chinese philosophy. He is currently working on the intersections of mathematics, physics, and philosophy in 18th century Europe.
For what promises to be a lively discussion!
