European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALs), 9th-10th March 2027
About this Event

The course is intended to provide training for multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals in the early recognition of the child in respiratory or circulatory failure and the development of the knowledge and core skills required to prevent further deterioration towards respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest. EPALS is approved by the royal colleges of emergency medicine, paediatrics, anaesthesia and the association of paediatric anaesthetists (RCPCH, RCEM, RCA, APA) for training and revalidation for both consultants and junior grades in advanced paediatric resuscitation skills and management.

Learning Outcomes

Undertaking the EPALS course should enable you to:

  • Recognise and manage the deteriorating child using a structured ABCDE approach;
  • Deliver standardised CPR in children;
  • Manage the critically ill child, including those in cardiac arrest, by working with a multidisciplinary team in an emergency situation;
  • Become an effective and confident team member and leader by utilizing non-technical skills.

Who is this course suitable for?

The EPALS course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis. Appropriate participants include doctors, nurses and paramedics working in direct contact with children. All applicants must hold a current clinical appointment and professional healthcare qualification. Medical students in their final year of training can be accepted as candidates.

**PLEASE NOTE YOU WILL BE REQUESTED TO SHOW A PHOTO ID UPON REGISTRATION**

Pre-Course Preparation

Four weeks prior to the course date

Candidates will receive the EPALS course manual and will be registered on the Resuscitation Council Learning Management System (LMS), where the pre-course course learning modules as well as the mandatory pre-course multiple choice question (MCQ) paper can be accessed. Preparation for the face-to-face session is mandatory and includes the following:

  • Thoroughly reading the course manual
  • Completing the online pre-course multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) - pass mark must be achieved

Important: Completion of the pre-course MCQ is compulsory. The mark does not contribute to the final course result but a pass grade of 80% must be achieved prior to course attendance. Failure to complete it will result in removal from the course, and no refund will be issued.

Course Structure

Over the two days, candidates will take part in lectures, interactive workshops, skill stations and simulations focusing on deteriorating children with paediatric illnesses, cardiac arrest management and trauma.

Assessment and Certification

Assessment: Candidates will be continuously assessed based on their performance in clinical simulations. You will be expected to show competency in the core skills of the course, including management of the critically ill/injured child, airway management, high quality CPR and defibrillation, and cardiac arrest management. At the end of the course, candidate’s knowledge and skills will be formally assessed during a simulation assessment.

Certification: Candidates who successfully complete the course will be awarded with a Resuscitation Council UK EPALS certificate, which is valid for four years and recognised in healthcare settings in the UK and Europe.

Course Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations must be made at least 30 days prior to the course start date to be eligible for a refund or transfer. If you have already received your manual for the course, this fee will be deducted from the refund.
  • Cancellations made within 30 days of the course date are not eligible for a refund or transfer, except in exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the course administrator.
  • Transfers to a future course may be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be subject to a transfer fee.
  • Non-attendance without prior notice will result in forfeiture of the course fee.
  • Should the course be cancelled by the centre, either a refund or alternative date will be provided.
  • This policy is applicable to both internal and external candidates of Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust
