About this Event

EurekaFest at Genspace Saturday, August 30 · 1:00–5:00 PM · Genspace, Brooklyn

Join us for an afternoon celebrating invention education and hands-on biotech at Genspace. EurekaFest brings together early-stage biotech founders, community makers, high school inventors, and industry professionals for two connected sessions: a venture pitch feedback workshop and a showcase of community-built projects from our lab.

This year, EurekaFest, a celebration by the Lemelson-MIT Foundation is going local, bringing invention education directly into communities. Genspace is proud to host, supporting inventors of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds across the biotech world.

1:00–3:00 PM | Membership Biotech Pitch Working Session Early-stage biotech founders (no funding or traction required, just an idea and a deck) will pitch to a panel of venture capital investors and industry professionals for feedback.

3:00–4:00 PM | Maker Presentations A showcase of hands-on biotech and maker projects from the Genspace community. Presenters will share short talks on their work, including the Brooklyn Tech LMIT InvenTeam's bacteria-powered air purification system for construction site safety, and Genspace community projects.

Brooklyn Tech LMIT InvenTeam A team of 15 high school students at Brooklyn Technical High School, supported by the Lemelson-MIT Foundation, who have spent the last year designing a biotech solution to a modern-day problem. Drawing on site visits, professional interviews, literature research, and mentorship from Genspace and local professors, the team has developed the "VOCuum" (patent pending) a semi-portable bioreactor-based air purification device designed to protect construction workers from exposure to volatile organic compounds like toluene and formaldehyde.

Juniper An early-stage venture capital firm writing the first checks into category-creating companies enabled by breakthroughs in biology, engineering, and computation. Founded by Jenny Kan and Michael Luciani, Juniper draws on Jenny's background as Lead Engineer in a Nobel Laureate's synthetic biology lab and Michael's experience building the Climate Capital Syndicate, one of the world's most active climate investment platforms.
