Eugene: Advanced Stage Family Caregiver Workshop (In-Person)

The advanced stages of Parkinson's disease may last anywhere from several months to several years. Often, intensive around-the-clock assistance is required. In the advanced stages of PD, families are called upon to make difficult decisions about their loved one's care. Even with the understanding that Parkinson's disease is progressive, it is often hard to be prepared for the reality of what this actually means and looks like.

This education workshop is designed to equip family members with the knowledge and resources to approach the advanced stages of the disease with greater confidence. Recognizing that every family situation is unique, this program will educate caregivers about the issues and decisions impacting quality of life. This includes an exploration of the physical and cognitive changes to expect, as well as the other medical aspects of advanced PD; the legal considerations to be aware of including long-term care basics and power of attorney; and finally a discussion of hospice services - what it really means, when it may be appropriate, and how to start this important conversation early.

Kim Sherman is the founder of Education, Environmental, & Estate Law, LLC (E3 Law), where she focuses on helping families protect and support loved ones with disabilities across the lifespan. Kim concentrates her legal practice on conservation easements, disability rights, special needs trusts, and estate planning, guiding caregivers through the practical and emotional decisions involved in planning for adulthood, incapacity, and long-term care. Kim holds a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Oregon and a J.D. from Willamette University, and she is licensed to practice law in Oregon and Washington.

Info: Sheree Miller is a devoted mother of eight and a deeply compassionate hospice nurse who considers it an honor to walk alongside patients and families through life’s final chapter. A Registered Nurse since 1997, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2005 and that same year began her lifelong calling in hospice care, becoming a Certified Hospice Nurse (CHN).

Since 2005, Sheree has also developed extensive experience educating individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their families—helping them understand their diagnosis, manage symptoms, and recognize how hospice care can support the best possible quality of life. With more than two decades of expertise, Sheree brings exceptional skill, steady presence, and heartfelt care to every patient she serves.
