ETAT, a Vienna-based netlabel specializing in dissociative psychoacoustic computer music, presents multichannel solo laptop performances by three of its members.
at 18:30 the evening starts with sound-installations by students of Graz's own IEM*
at 19:30: concerts by RM Francis, Robert Schwarz and Jung an Tagen
*installations are located in the cloister outside KULTUM.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Jung An Tagen invites us to reflect on the diffuse but persistent term “experimental” not as deviation from aesthetic orthodoxy, but as the design and implementation of compositional systems that offer unpredictable results; “electronic” as an annulment of the previous instrumental tradition, and as a simultaneous reversion towards aesthetic openness; as the fragmentation of a theoretical or mythical musical syntax by obsessive repetition, sequential motivic mutations, aleatoric arrays, pareidolic illusions and moiré effects; “electronic” as the ultimate split, dehumanisation, mechanic strangeness.
RM Francis is an artist based in Seattle working with computer-generated sound and language via recording, installation, and performance. His practice foregrounds computation-based compositional strategies, focusing on methods that exploit discrepancies between human and artificial auditory systems. His current work exploits latent phonological data extracted from non-linguistic sound in order to generate the tonal, rhythmic, and semantic content of synthesized speech. The resulting synthetic Sprechgesang forms the basis of a depopulated opera, articulating the potentialities of speech decoupled from embodied human expression while navigating between abstract sound and uncanny characterological specificity.
Robert Schwarz is a sound artist from Vienna with a background in computer music, sound studies and architecture. His current work explores the acoustic dimensions of insects, focusing in particular on spatio-temporal patterns resulting from the coupling of swarm behaviour and time synchronisation. In his compositions, synthetic sounds interact with audio recordings of insects, following their internal logic while creating new and abstract entities. By deliberately obscuring the distinction between synthesis and field recording, Schwarz suggests profound and dissociative states of listening.
