About this Event
The Living Table is a series of food-based gatherings in which participants ingest, digest, and at times prepare or cook the elements of a meal. Each event focuses on specific ingredients or themed conversations – no two iterations are the same.
For ‘Essays on Salt–The First Harvest and performance’ Dr Yanet Acosta Meneses will lead a performative writing session as part of a series of mail interactions between Yanet and artist Désirée Coral during the summer that they called The Return of the Salt. Immersed in the vapour of papas arrugadas, a traditional dish from the Canary Islands. The recipe is embedded in salt, brine, and maritime history, tracing exchanges between the Canaries and the Americas through Spanish and British colonial routes. As steam, salt, and language circulate, the gathering becomes a space to reflect on migration, extraction, and the embodied legacies of colonial histories.
For Yanet cooking is performance. Yanet describes the performance as “the search for conciliation through a dish in which the ingredients of two polarised positions colonised and colonizer are embedded in the ingredients.” While the papas arrugadas will be cooking in the gallery, Yaneth will be executing a performative writing in which participants will be invited to respond to Yanet’s writing in a variety of ways such as reading, discussion and writing.
As part of this event, food will be prepared and cooked in the gallery. We will be offering a tasting of papas arrugadas, we will provide a full ingredient list and food is consumed at your own discretion.
This event is supported by Outerspaces funding artists and artist communities.
