Der Grazer Kunstverein lädt Sie zur Ausstellungseröffnung von Nora Schultz ein. Es ist die letzte Ausstellung im Programm von Tom Engels, künstlerischer Leiter des Grazer Kunstvereins.
„Nun, da ihnen fast nur noch Luft geblieben war, dachten sie daran, Drachen zu bauen.“
"Nun," ist nicht nur ein Maß der Zeit. Es ist der Dreh- und Angelpunkt eines Arguments. Es hält die Gegenwart offen und lässt eine Abfolge nach vorn kippen. Jede Äußerung verankert etwas im Moment und gibt es gleichzeitig weiter. Es ist sowohl Pause als auch Antrieb – ein Intervall, das sich in die Konsequenz hineinlehnt.
"Nun," tritt als Ankündigung auf. Nicht als Ruf nach Aufmerksamkeit, sondern als leises Signal, dass etwas beginnen wird, dass sich die nächste Geste bereits formt. Es wird immer wieder ausgesprochen, jedes Mal markiert es eine weitere Wendung – eine neue Falte, ein weiteres Gewicht, eine weitere Oberfläche, die in Frage gestellt wird. Wir bauen auf diesen kleinen Erklärungen auf. Jede Entscheidung betritt den Raum mit der Kraft eines Schlags.
Dieser Schlag ist keine Metapher. Er ist eine Trommel: gespannte Haut, vibrierendes Metall, Stöcke, die Druck von einem Punkt zum anderen leiten. "Nun," wird hörbar in der Spannung zwischen den Materialien, in ihren winzigen Verschiebungen, in der Resonanz, die entsteht, wenn sie Widerstand leisten oder nachgeben. Er kündigt kein Ende an, sondern eine Fortsetzung; er gibt das Tempo vor, in dem sich die Arbeit selbst findet.
Eine Fackel flammt auf, und Zinn gibt sein Gewicht frei. Glasfaser biegt sich gegen die Erwartung der Hand – das plötzliche Anheben eines Papierblattes, das die Luft prüft. Ein materielles Argument.
„Nun, was ist ein Drachen im Vergleich zu einem Vogel?
Oder zu einer Trommel?“

Now, is not only a measure of time. It is the hinge of an argument. It holds the present open and lets a sequence tip forward. Each utterance lodges something in the moment and, at the same time, releases it onward. It is both pause and propulsion – an interval that leans into consequence.
Now, arrives as an announcement. Not as a call for attention, but as the quiet signal that something is about to begin, that the next gesture is already forming. It is spoken again and again, each time marking another turn – another fold, another added weight, another surface brought into question. We build from these small declarations. Each decision enters the room with the force of a beat.
That beat is not metaphorical. It is a drum: skin pulled, metal set trembling, sticks conducting pressure from one point to another. Now, becomes audible in the tension between materials, in their minute shifts, in the resonance that grows when they resist or when they give. It does not announce an end, but a continuation; it sets the pace at which the work finds itself.
A torch flares and tin releases its weight. Fibreglass flexes against the hand’s expectation – the sudden lift of a sheet of paper testing the air. A material argument.
‘Now, what is a kite compared to a bird?
Or a drum?’
