Errant Ways: Diaspora, Belonging and Fugitivity as Practice

Join artist Gerardo Dexter Ciprian for a conversation on his recent work.

From the artist: “The talk will center on how the experience of being part of a diaspora, when viewed in a certain light, might present certain limitations, marginality and a perpetual state of not belonging. What I want to offer is that when viewed from an active place, the positionality of fugitivity offers a radical new way of belonging, a de-centering that’s not pathological but rather liberatory; un-discipline that can disrupt entrenched histories in productive ways.” Following the talk, the artist will share a work-in-progress film titled Cuando el Rio Suena, es Porque Piedras Trae (When the River Rumbles, Stones Flow in Its Currents). The film draws on Ciprian’s family VHS recordings, other archival footage and imagery to unearth the ephemera of the Dominican diaspora and a broader immigrant imaginary as a source of wisdom, mystery and resilience.

The Work in Progress (WIP) residency is a behind the scenes look into the studio practice of contemporary artists and designers, that engages a dialogue surrounding innovation in the field of textiles. For one month, WIP residents develop and showcase their work and practice in the Brooklyn studio. Additionally, WIP residents host workshops, lectures and events for the community.
