About this Event
The hoverflies (Syrphidae) are a key component of most habitats. The ecosystem services they provide include pollination (72% of crop plants worldwide), pest control (many common species feed on aphids etc) and prey to birds and other animals. Over 280 species have been recorded in the UK, though some are much more common and widespread than others. Many species have colours and patterns that make them more appealing to the amateur recorder (as well as the wider public) than other species of true fly (Diptera).
In this workshop we will begin by looking at the basics of hoverfly identification, including the key features and structures which help to distinguish different groups. We will be given the opportunity to examine specimens in the lab, as well as explore the college grounds to look for living hoverflies and try to identify them.
