Erasure or blackout poetry is a type of found poetry created by taking an existing text and “erasing” or blacking out words on the page.The poet uses marker, pen, paint, or digital methods to "erase" words on the page, leaving behind the words that form a new and original poem.
Learn how to create your own erasure poems using used books. This workshop is open to all ages. There will be texts to play with and create poetry, or participants can bring their own books to erase.
*To create your Erasure or Blackout Poetry we recommend you bring photocopies or originals of your own books, newspapers, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc.
ABOUT:
Holly Lyn Walrath is a poet living in Houston, Texas. She is the author of several books of poetry including Glimmerglass Girl (2018), The Smallest of Bones (2021), and Numinous Stones (2023). She holds a B.A. in English from The University of Texas and a Master’s in Creative Writing from the University of Denver.
The artist presents her Erasure Workshop as part of her exhibition Poetry Between the Lines , which is currently on view at the East Corridor Gallery (ECG) at Sabine Street Studios .
Taking place during National Poetry Month in April, Poetry Between the Lines is an exhibition of large scale erasure poems.
East Corridor Gallery, or ECG , and is part of an annual art exhibition project that celebrates the line as an essential conceptual element in the visual arts. The annual project that will include exhibitions, dance and workshops is a project funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
