Epoxy Clay Sculpture - Carolyn V Watson
In this immersive two-hour workshop, participants will gain a comprehensive introduction to working with epoxy clay — from correct preparation and safe handling practices, through to advanced sculptural applications developed across Carolyn V Watson’s extensive exhibition career. The session will explore essential material knowledge, including accurate mixing ratios, techniques for extending workable time, methods for avoiding common curing issues, and practical studio shortcuts refined through more than twelve years of experimentation with the medium.
Participants will learn how to manipulate, texture, sculpt, repair, and seamlessly integrate epoxy clay into ceramics, armatures, and small sculptural forms. While discovering ways to push the material beyond traditional applications. Carolyn will also share approaches to surface building, blending joins, creating organic textures, and developing resilient structures. Alongside important safety considerations such as ventilation, skin protection, tool care, and best studio practices when working with epoxy-based materials. Designed for both beginners and experienced makers, this workshop offers rare insight into the inventive processes, problem-solving strategies, and material confidence behind Watson’s celebrated sculptural works and exhibition practice.

Meet Carolyn V Watson
Carolyn V Watson is a Brisbane/ Meanjin artist and workshop facilitator whose practice connects : drawing, sculpture, and installation, exploring themes of memory, personal history, ritual, and transformation. For more than twenty years, she has cultivated a distinctive visual language that balances the immediacy of drawing with the slow, contemplative processes of sculptural making. Working across assemblage ( reclaimed timber) , hand-stitching ( textiles) and unique skins and components ( epoxy clay) , Watson creates richly textured works that exist between the familiar and the uncanny, often drawing influence from gothic imagery, natural history, domestic spaces, and the lush unpredictability of the garden surrounding her studio. Her psychologically charged works blur the boundaries between the human-made and organic, inviting viewers into immersive worlds shaped by intuition, material experimentation, and deeply personal reflection.
