Join Moderator Dan Zachary, director of the Johns Hopkins MS in Energy Policy and Climate program, and co-moderators and JHU colleagues Lama Elhatow and David Guggenheim, for a discussion with panelists Dimitra Papadaki, Mo Hafez, and Mansour Raad on how artificial intelligence has influenced thinking on energy generation and use. This roundtable brings together experts in energy economics, grid modernization, and digital ethics to explore the transformative role of AI in the energy sector. Panelists will discuss how machine learning is reshaping energy forecasting and system efficiency, the geopolitical and economic implications of AI-driven demand, and the ethical frameworks necessary to ensure that the digital transformation of our energy infrastructure remains sustainable, secure, and equitable. The discussion will bridge the gap between technical innovation and strategic policy, providing a roadmap for future leaders at the intersection of energy and emerging technology.

Dimitra Papadaki is an adjunct faculty member in the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She is also a Senior Researcher at the Physics Department at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. During her PhD and post-doctoral studies, she conducted research at various international research institutes including the Council of Science and Industrial Research in South Africa, the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, the Institute National de la Recherche Scientifique in Canada, and the National University of Singapore.

Papadaki holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Technical University of Crete’s School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. She earned an MS in Environment and Resource Management from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and a BS in Environmental Physics and Meteorology, National and Kapodistrian from the University of Athens.

Mo Hafez, an ethical technologist, forward-thinking strategist, and an active member of the Association of AI Ethicists, serves as lecturer at Johns Hopkins where he brings more than15 years of experience in the tech industry to his courses. He has led transformative projects for Fortune 500 companies across artificial intelligence, cloud migration, cybersecurity, and network optimization and collaborates with organizations to implement ethical AI frameworks and drive impactful digital transformation.

Hafez is also the founder and CEO of ByteWise LLC, a pioneering corporate training company dedicated to advancing digital literacy and promoting the ethical application of technology. As the host of the podcast Beyond the Byte, he engages with global thought leaders to explore the intersection of technology, ethics, and society, further amplifying his mission to educate and inspire.

Hafez holds an MBA in Executive Leadership from James Madison University, which underpins his ability to connect strategic innovation with responsible leadership. His work at Johns Hopkins and ByteWise reflects a dedication to shaping a new generation of innovators and policymakers poised to make a lasting impact in the energy and climate sectors.

With over 30 years of experience in the IT/GIS field, Mansour Raad is the Global Chief Technologist at Esri where he leads advanced spatial analytics using machine learning. Esri’s big data subject matter expert and a Cloudera-certified Hadoop Developer, he often assists commercial and government customers in implementing big data and machine learning geospatial solutions.

Raad has served as a team leader in architecting and implementing product solutions for Esri, including ArcIMS, ArcWeb, ArcGIS for Flex, and, currently, GeoAnalytics and GeoAI solutions. Before joining Esri, he designed and implemented an airport noise and operations monitoring system used in over 30 airports worldwide. He also collaborated with the U.S. Navy to develop digital signal processing techniques that lead to improvements in the preventive maintenance of helicopter gearboxes.

Raad holds an MS degree in Aerospace Engineering from Boston University and frequently blogs and speak at international organizations on big data topics and GeoSpatial/GeoAI implementations.
