The Archetype of Spiritual Warfare
WHEN WE COME FACE TO FACE WITH EVIL, we enter the territory of spiritual warfare, one of the most powerful archetypal themes in human history.
We will review some views from various religious traditions - Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity - and then consider the psychodynamics of various aspects of spiritual warfare.
We will discuss this spiritual warfare in the context of the Jungian understanding of the shadow side of human personality. We often talk about the shadow as a factor in the development of the individual psyche, but this discussion considers something else as well, the relationship between the personal shadow and the archetypal shadow.
We will also look at the New Age tendency to deny the reality and power of evil. This widespread “love & light” is particularly tempting today because it requires so little in the way of either reflection or responsability. It enables continued denial of the seriousness of the situation, and denial of how we as individuals participate in our own destruction, and the destruction of our communities and planet.
