Watermelon Day at the Enterprise Farmers Market is going to be a day of mouthwatering fun!Whether at a backyard cookout or a beach picnic, nothing says “fun” like watermelon season in the South. The refreshing summertime staple will be celebrated with fun and games Saturday, June 26 at the Enterprise Farmers Market.
The annual Watermelon Day activities will feature farmers with fresh peak-season produce – not only watermelons but cantaloupes, tomatoes, peas, peppers, squash, onions, and a variety of other fruit and vegetables.
Handmade crafts will also be available for the creative shopper.
The watermelon will take front and center stage that day at the market, with lots of mouthwatering contests. Come compete or watch the Largest Watermelon, Watermelon Eating, Seed Spitting, and Rolling competitions.
The market opens at 7 a.m. with the produce and arts and crafts vendors ready to greet customers.
The watermelon festivities will kick off at 8 a.m. with a welcome by Mayor William E. Cooper. There will be free samples of watermelon on a stick, door prizes, and special awards for the winning contestants so everyone has a chance to be a winner on Watermelon Day.
Farmers or backyard gardeners who want to enter their contenders in the Biggest Watermelon Contest are invited to be at the market by 8 a.m. for the contest at 8:30. Watermelon Day sponsor First South Farm Credit will provide a $50 prize to the watermelon that weighs in the heaviest.
The Seed-Spitting Contest starts at 9 a.m., with the Watermelon Rolling Contest taking place at 10 a.m. and the Watermelon Eating Contest at 11 a.m. Cash prizes and gifts will also be awarded to the winners of these contests.
