About this Event

This workshop is intended to help service-learning students  think critically about their role in the community during the service learning experience, including their potential impacts on the  community. The purpose is to help Tulane students of all backgrounds  explore the context of service learning and the relationship between  New Orleans and Tulane, including the ways in which power, privilege  and identity shape their experience. Students will be introduced to  issues such as power dynamics, systemic oppression, and the savior  complex in the context of community engagement. Students will then  have an opportunity to explore some of the knowledge, behaviors and  attitudes needed to engage with communities ethically, horizontally  and respectfully.
