June 4th is Dharmachakra Day, when we celebrate Buddha’s first teaching in this world. It is also the day our precious Spiritual Guide, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche was born. The Refuge Vow marks the moment that someone enters Buddhism by determining to follow the Buddhist path through taking refuge in the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
Buddha is the source of all teachings and blessings, Dharma is the inner experience or realization of Buddha’s teachings, and Sangha are the sincere Dharma practitioners who help us along the path by showing a good example, giving teachings, and giving good advice.
By relying upon the Three Jewels we establish an inner refuge of spiritual experience in our heart, which is the foundation for freedom, joy, and protection from suffering, both here and now and for our future lives and the attainments of liberation and enlightenment.
On this special day, in the morning, Gen Norden will give a talk and guided meditation on the meaning of Buddhist faith and practice. This will be followed in the afternoon by a Refuge Ceremony for those who wish to formally become a Buddhist, or to renew their Buddhist refuge.
The Refuge Ceremony consists of beautiful chanted prayers and meditation. Within this Ceremony you will have the opportunity to take the Refuge Vow, by promising throughout your life, to apply effort to receiving Buddha’s blessings, putting Dharma into practice, and receiving help from Sangha - pure spiritual practitioners. You are welcome to bring an offering, such as flowers, fruit or candles to place on the offering table.
Schedule:
Teaching on Buddhist Faith & Practice: 10–11:30am
Lunch Break: 11:30am–1pm
Refuge Ceremony: 1–3pm
This day will also serve as our farewell for the Summer to our Resident Teacher Gen Norden before she leaves for Europe to attend the Kadampa Festivals and annual Intensive Teacher Training Program for the Summer.
