Enhanced Devising Workshop: Themes, Text, Object Manipulation, and Movement

Are you an actor/actor in training interested in devised theatre? Looking for a creative space to explore devising, text, object manipulation, and movement? Join our Enhanced Devising Workshop on Sunday 28th February 2023 at Tramshed, brought to you by the creatives from Caligula and the Sea (VAULT Festival 2023)!

About the Workshop

This 1-day workshop is led by Yuxuan Liu, our director, and Sean Croft, our movement director, to give you a taste of our process of creating devised new writing that incorporates text, puppetry, music, and movement. Throughout the day, you will explore how text, choice of themes, object manipulation, and movement respond to scene creation in a devised process. You will also generate your own materials working with Sean, Yuxuan, and the other workshop participants as a company.

The workshop will be a creative, collaborative, and fun space suitable for actors and actors in training at all stages of their career/training. You don't need to have prior experience with devising, just come along with an open and playful mind!

This workshop is for everyone aged 18 and over.

About

A new devised play that examines themes of power, friendship, masculinity, and the environment. A fantastical, dramatic, gripping, and not-so-historically-accurate retelling of the tales of the infamous young Roman emperor, Caligula.

About Facilitators

(Caligula and the Sea - Movement Director)

Sean trained at École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq & East 15 Acting School.

At The Lecoq School over the two year professional program, he trained in devised theatre, ensemble building, character physicality and creation, mask, mime, object manipulation, puppetry and clowning, among a vast array of other Physical Theatre based specialist skills & performance styles.

At East 15 over the three year Bachelors degree course. Sean covered extensive training in specialist Stage Combat skills & nine different weapon sets graded by the BADC & BASSC alongside an extensive acting and performance program, in contemporary and classical practitioners.

Sean’s approach to theatre making follows predominantly from his training at the Lecoq School, with the body first, and how it moves within the space. Observing the world around us with playful curiosity and finding a way of translating this into a performative medium.

Sean has worked professionally as a Performer, Movement & Fight Director, Choreographer and Teacher for the past ten years in the UK, Europe and China.

Sean teaches at City Lit and other theatre institutions across the UK, online in China and private classes to performers.

Sean is passionate about exploring new approaches to theatre making in ensemble based, collaborative-led projects focussed around new writing and adaptations. He is currently working on directing his first show this year and developing a new two-person mask show for 2024.

(Caligula and the Sea - Director)

Yuxuan is a theatre director based in London.

He is excited by fun, provocative, inventive, and international theatre experiences. His work ranges from children's theatre and new writing to the reimagining of classic plays.

Recent directing credits: BoyBi (2022, The Bread & Roses Theatre), It's Not Goodbye, It's Just Goodnight (2022, Bristol Old Vic Weston Studio), Hamlet (2022, The Wardrobe Theatre), Fallen Leaves (2021, Clifftown Theatre).

Yuxuan graduated from the MA Drama Directing course at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and the BA World Performance course at East 15 Acting School.
