About this Event

Catalytic converters are an important part of a vehicle’s exhaust system and contain precious metals that make them a frequent target for theft. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), catalytic converter thefts have increased by more than 300% nationwide in recent years.

To help deter these thefts and assist with investigations, CVPD is offering free VIN engraving on catalytic converters. Engraving your vehicle identification number (VIN) onto your catalytic converter may help discourage theft and aid law enforcement in identifying stolen property.

Participants must register in advance for a 15-minute appointment slot; however, the engraving process itself only takes a few minutes to complete.

This event is generously sponsored by the City of Chula Vista. The Public Works Automotive Department will provide this service free of charge on June 27, 2026, to the first 250 registered participants.

To register, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Your vehicle must be currently registered (proof of vehicle registration is required).
  • Only passenger vehicles qualify (no RVs).

If you have any questions, please contact the CVPD Property Crimes Unit at [email protected] or (619) 691-5146.
