About this Event
You are invited to a series of walking tours (with three separate dates to choose from) of the landmark English Station power plant and the Mill River District. Despite its contaminated state and deep challenges, English Station has been described as the "crown jewel" of New Haven because of its prominence on the city skyline and its critical significance as a linchpin for the revitalization of New Haven's post-industrial landscape. Once a symbol of New Haven's decline, with the right combination of community support and political will, English Station is poised to become both a symbol and catalyst of a remarkable renaissance.
On this 1 1/2 mile tour, you will hear from technical experts as well as important community leaders and stakeholders including the City of New Haven, CitySeed, Fair Haven Community Management Team, UConn’s CIRCA program, Grand Avenue Special Services District, Junta for Progressive Action, Mill River Watershed Association, Mill River Trail Association, New Haven Urban Design League, Save the Sound, Site Projects, and other community and environmental organizations about the history of the area and the outstanding work being done to revitalize the community surrounding English Station.
Join the tour, and learn about:
- Efforts by Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and other elected officials to hold the United Illuminating Company accountable for decades of polluting the English Station site, get the long-delayed remediation back on track and ensure that one of New Haven’s most impacted Environmental Justice communities is no longer at risk from this toxic 'weapon of mass contamination'
- Plans under development by the City of New Haven for a revitalized "Mill River District" that will support existing business and expand residential, commercial and water-dependent uses;
- Projects for Fair Haven neighborhood improvement and climate resiliency led by UConn’s Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation (CIRCA) program, and other environmental, business, and community leaders;
- The history of English Station and potential future uses for the building and site;
