🎤 Speaker: Yamile Jackson, PhD, PE, PMP, is an ergonomics and safety engineer, inventor, and author, and the founder of Nurtured by Design®. She is the creator of The Zaky® and the founder of Kangaroo Care Day (May 15). Her work advances evidence-based, family-integrated newborn care through engineering, safety science, and human-centered design.

When Dr. Yamile Jackson’s son was born prematurely and admitted to the NICU, she encountered a system expertly designed for survival—but not always for sustained human connection during medical care.

Trained as a PhD-level ergonomics and safety engineer, Yamile approached this gap through an engineering lens, asking a defining question: What if we applied the same rigor, evidence, and design standards used for safety and performance to human touch, development, neuroprotection, and connection? That question led to the creation of The Zaky®, an evidence-based, human-centered innovation now used in hospitals worldwide to support safe, continuous connection between babies and their families.

In Engineering Human Touch: How Science Can Expand the Power of Love, Yamile weaves engineering, medicine, and lived experience—sharing how her son survived Tropical Storm Allison in Houston (2001) when the hospital lost power, a moment later dramatized in the TNT film, 14 Hours. Her work continues to redefine how newborn care is designed, delivered, and experienced—placing love, safety, and science at the center of care. In 2014, Oprah Winfrey honored her with the Standing Ovation Award for her impact on babies and families worldwide.
