About this Event

The Children’s Policy and Law Initiative of Indiana is hosting a Positive School Discipline Institute event, Engaging Community and Families as Partners in Student Success: Addressing School Absenteeism and Practicing Culturally-Responsive, Trauma-Informed Positive School Discipline This event will engage families and community members with two key focus areas:

• Culturally-Responsive, Trauma-Informed Discipline Practices—We will discuss the impact of trauma on a child’s behavior at home and in school, strategies and resources to help support children experiencing trauma, and how school personnel and other caring adults can interact with children and youth in a culturally responsive, trauma-informed manner to minimize exclusionary discipline practices and enhance relationships.

• Absenteeism—We will address the increase in school absenteeism; what the underlying causes could be, and how schools, families and the community can partner to curb this growing issue. We will discuss how to curb this very real trend in children and young people.

This event is funded by the African American Quality of Life Initiative
