Ethnic Studies for ALL ! From Pre-K through 12th grade, all learners benefit from experiential and culturally relevant learning.
About this Event

Oakland educators, are you and your colleagues interested in exploring the histories, experiences, cultures, and issues of racial & ethnic groups in the United States? Have you ever wanted the time and space to plan thoughtful integration of Ethnic Studies themes into your content area? Interested in making this exploration come alive by integrating hands-on learning?
Come take this team-based 4 session participatory series to explore how to integrate making and ethnic studies into your curriculum through engaging in an inquiry cycle.

Registration is free of charge and open to all K-12 Oakland Public School teams* of educators (district & charter) through a generous grant from our funders.

In this series we will:

1. Explore the key themes from OUSD’s ethnic studies curriculum:

  • Origins, identity & culture
  • Power, privilege, and oppression
  • Resistance and Liberation
  • Action

2. Identify an area of curiosity

3. Design a hands-on activity(ies) related to your area of curiosity

4. Engage in a short inquiry cycle to try out the activity(ies) with your learners

5. Receive coaching to support your inquiry

6. Gain a new lens with which to engage students in their learning

When you register, make sure to get a ticket for each date of the series. We encourage you to register with a team of 2 - 8 members from your school site. The first and last meeting will be from 4 -7pm, and the meetings in between will be 4 - 6pm.

About the Engage & Explore series:

For the last 5 years, Design Oakland has offered a highly successful year long teacher fellowship. We heard from many educators who want to take the fellowship but can’t commit to a year long experience. We created the Engage & Explore series to give Oakland educators the opportunity to try out some of the key pieces of our liberatory maker-centered learning professional development. Each series will have a different focus and/or engage with a different aspect of the Design framework. Please check back throughout the year for additional learning opportunities.
