About this Event

Encounters: a day of experimental performance and film

Hauser & Wirth Publishers, MACK, and SPBH Editions are pleased to present a day of experimental performance and film, from artists including Teju Cole, Carmen Winant, Stephen Shore, Justine Kurland, RaMell Ross, and Vince Aletti. This program will encompass the gallery, amphitheater, and bookstore of Hauser & Wirth 18th Street.
A selection of artists curated by MACK and SPBH Editions will participate in a series of twenty-minute activations from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. These will follow a variety of formats, from soundscapes to performance, correlating with each artist’s respective practice. After each there will be a book signing onsite in the gallery’s Roth Bar. In tandem with the performance series, we will have multiple screenings of rare films, including the debut feature film by Richard Billingham, two studies of the work of Donald Judd, and a selection of Queer shorts curated by Sam Ashby.

This is a free programme, so please drop in, and enjoy.

About MACK

MACK is an independent publisher of award-winning books on visual art and architecture. We work with pioneering creative minds and institutions across the globe and pride ourselves on the rigour and care that goes into every stage of the book-making process.

In 2010, our founder Michael Mack set out to build a publishing house that engages in critical dialogues around visual culture in beautifully designed editions. We have since grown to become the experimental home for authors across disciplines: a place where a handbook on post-carbon architecture can sit happily alongside a collection of essays on modernist painting, a facsimile collection of Francesca Woodman’s remarkable artist’s books, a conversation between a psychoanalyst and a violinmaker, and a career-defining monograph by Deana Lawson, Tacita Dean, or Sofia Coppola.

About SPBH Editions

SPBH Editions, developed in 2011 under the aegis of Self Publish, Be Happy, has established itself as a champion of critical dialogue within contemporary photography and visual culture. What began with a focus on photobooks has evolved to include a wide array of fiction, nonfiction, and critical theory. With a steadfast commitment to producing challenging, experimental, and political publications, SPBH Editions seeks to expand the frontiers of possibilities in publishing.
