Encaustic is one of the oldest types of painting in the world. Using bees wax, pigment and damar resin, we will melt the wax medium, paint with the hot pigment and discover unique textural techiques in the encaustic method. This class will specifically be using the monotype printmaking method where we melt pigment onto an anodized aluminum plate and transfer the imagery onto paper.
Students will learn how to set up, apply and mix colors as well as some cool additional techniques to enhance their paintings. Students will be able to use their monotype papers to create at least 2 8"x10" paintings, but if you want to do more, you can bring some hard boards, plywood or Masonite as a substrate for collage. All the other materials will be provided.
