En Foco Presents Say It With Your Chest: Writing your Artist Statement

Join En Foco for a special artist statement writing workshop facilitated by artist Lizzy Alejandro. This session is designed to support artists in developing clear, compelling artist statements that reflect the depth, intention, and vision behind their work.

Artist statements are often a critical component of fellowship, grant, exhibition, and residency applications. Lizzy will help participants articulate their creative practice in their own voice, without relying on overly academic or inaccessible language. Whether you are writing your first artist statement or revising an existing one, this workshop will offer tools to help you communicate your ideas with greater clarity and confidence.

This workshop is presented in support of the 2026 En Foco Artist Fellowship Program and is especially helpful for artists preparing their fellowship applications. However, artists at all stages of their careers and working across disciplines are welcome to attend.

Participants will leave the session with:

• A stronger understanding of what makes an effective artist statement
• Writing prompts and frameworks to guide their process
• Strategies for describing their work in accessible and meaningful ways
• New or revised text, they can continue refining after the workshop

To ensure accessibility for our community, this workshop is offered on a sliding scale of $10–$50. Participants are encouraged to contribute at the level that feels comfortable and sustainable for them.
