Empowering Leaders: Skills for Communication, Facilitation, and Presenting

Please join this in-person event, led by Lee Shainis of Simplify Language.

The SLV is composed of many small communities, each addressing its own unique issues and working toward a brighter future. The Local Foods Coalition seeks to plant the seeds of community resilience and nurture leaders of all ages by providing the tools, skills, and confidence they need to take initiative, collaborate, and drive meaningful change.

Simplifying Communication (morning session)

• Learn skills so all audiences can quickly understand your written and spoken communication.
• Improve engagement, trust, efficiency, and inclusion.
• Better organize and reduce writing by 20-80% without removing content or “dumbing down”.
• Build awareness of language exclusion, power, and privilege.
• Use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make communication more efficient and accessible.
• Transform language access - learn how to create better translations and save time and money.

Facilitation & Presenting (afternoon session)

• Learn ways to engage your audience every 3 minutes.
• Strengthen authentic public speaking skills.
• Articulate your vision and goals to target audiences, whether you have 15 seconds or 5 minutes.
• Foster conversations where participants contribute ideas and their expertise.
• Gain strategies to respond to challenging questions or behaviors from participants.
• Learn ways to begin and end presentations and meetings.
• Create consistent structures and guidelines for public speaking and gatherings.
• Improve efficiency by creating effective desired meeting results (DMRs).
• Create a culture of practice and feedback around these skills at your organization.

Details

• Please register by February 1st. This will ensure we have enough seating, materials.
• The event is free, though you are welcome to make a donation.
• Coffee & refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
• Lunch will be provided by the Valley Roots Food Hub. We are asking $17.85 for the cost of the meal. Though if this is not within your means, no worries. We’ll cover your lunch.
• Spanish translation will be provided by SLV Language Justice Coop.
• A zoom link will be available to observe the training, but unfortunately Zoom attendees will not be able to ask questions or participate.
• Feel free to attend the whole day, or just attend the morning or afternoon session.
• Please arrive by 8:45 so we can begin promptly at 9am.
