Empanadas Ilegales - "Laboratorio Tropical" Album Release Show
About this Event
Somewhere between Vancouver and Montreal, between cumbia and the cosmos, between the apocalypse and the dancefloor, there is a laboratory.
Join us for a night of psychedelic tropical music, dancing, and the official launch of LABORATORIO TROPICAL, the long-awaited fourth album from Vancouver's Empanadas Ilegales with special guest A Bit Cold (Montreal) and vinyl selections by Juana Go-Gó (Toronto)
Empanadas Ilegales have spent nearly a decade breaking tropical music down to its bones, recombining it under pressure, and testing what comes out the other side. LABORATORIO TROPICAL, their fourth album, is the report from the lab.
About Empanadas Ilegales
Empanadas Ilegales is a Vancouver-based tropical psychedelic music ensemble known for genre-bending compositions and kinetic live performances.
Formed in 2017 by musicians with roots in Colombia,Argentina, and Canada, the group merges LatinAmerican traditions with surf rock, free jazz, and experimental psychedelia.
Their 2025 album Sancocho Trifásico put them on the map internationally: Bandcamp Daily feature, Songlines review, CBC radio play, festival slots at FME, Calgary Folk, and Montreal Jazz Fest. Far Out Magazine named it one of five 21st century cumbia masterpieces, writing that the band is "not only carrying the torch of that legendary cumbia sound into the modern age, but adapting and adding to the sound in a way that will keep the scene moving organically." LABORATORIO TROPICAL is where that musical alchemy continues.
